We had the opportunity to share the student archival projects with the elders at the Whampoa ComSA Centre. Through this engagement, students connected meaningfully with the elders and witnessed how their drawings, narratives, and spatial memories resonated with lived experiences. The encounter sparked rich conversations and recollections, deepening the students’ appreciation for intergenerational dialogue. It also affirmed the role of design as a medium for empathy, connection, and care. As the elders explored the archival materials, some remarked that it would be meaningful to begin documenting their own memories of life in Whampoa through a mobile archive similar to the Wah Fu transportable case. This box is something I can pass on to my kids, to my grandchildren. We can also use this method to archive our neighbourhood, like the Whampoa hawker centre, which may not be around in the future. And you want to keep that good memory in this design. It could be pictures, videos or music that I love.
